until death do us part

April 2nd, 2009

this came to my inbox from up alumni egroup..
it’s a long read but you can scroll down to the last 2-paragraphs as summed it all..

When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, I’ve got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes. Suddenly I didn’t know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly. She didn’t seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why? I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man! That night, we didn’t talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer; she had lost my heart to Dew. I didn’t love her anymore. I just pitied her! With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated that she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company.

She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman who had spent ten years of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for her wasted time, resources and energy but I could not take back what I had said for I loved Dew so dearly. Finally she cried loudly in front of me, which was what I had expected to see. To me her cry was actually a kind of release. The idea of divorce which had obsessed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer now. The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing something at the table. I didn’t have supper but went straight to sleep and fell asleep very fast because I was tired after an eventful day with Dew. When I woke up, she was still there at the table writing. I just did not care so I turned over and was asleep again.

In the morning she presented her divorce conditions: she didn’t want anything from me, but needed a month’s notice before the divorce. She requested that in that one month we both struggle to live as normal a life as possible. Her reasons were simple: our son had his exams in a month’s time and she didn’t want to disrupt him with our broken marriage. This was agreeable to me. But she had something more, she asked me to recall how I had carried her into out bridal room on our wedding day. She requested that everyday for the month’s duration I carry her out of our bedroom to the front door ever morning. I thought she was going crazy. Just to make our last days together bearable I accepted her odd request.

I told Dew about my wife’s divorce conditions… She laughed loudly and thought it was absurd. No matter what tricks she applies, she has to face the divorce, she said scornfully. My wife and I hadn’t had any body contact since my divorce intention was explicitly expressed. So when I carried her out on the first day, we both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holding mummy in his arms. His words brought me a sense of pain. From the bedroom to the sitting room, then to the door, I walked over ten meters with her in my arms. She closed her eyes and said softly; don’t tell our son about the divorce. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outside the door. She went to wait for the bus to work. I drove alone to the office. On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my chest. I could smell the fragrance of her blouse. I realized that I hadn’t looked at this woman carefully for a long time.. I realized she was not young any more. There were fine wrinkles on her face, her hair was graying! Our marriage had taken its toll on her. For a minute I wondered what I had done to her.

On the fourth day, when I lifted her up, I felt a sense of intimacy returning. This was the woman who had given ten years of her life to me.

On the fifth and sixth day, I realized that our sense of intimacy was growing again. I didn’t tell Dew about this. It became easier to carry her as the month slipped by. Perhaps the everyday workout made me stronger. She was choosing what to wear one morning. She tried on quite a few dresses but could not find a suitable one. Then she sighed, all my dresses have grown bigger. I suddenly realized that she had grown so thin, that was the reason why I could carry her more easily. Suddenly it hit me… she had buried so much pain and bitterness in her heart. Subconsciously I reached out and touched her head. Our son came in at the moment and said, Dad, it’s time to carry mum out. To him, seeing his father carrying his mother out had become an essential part of his life. My wife gestured to our son to come closer and hugged him tightly. I turned my face away because I was afraid I might change my mind at this last minute. I then held her in my arms, walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to the hallway. Her hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally. I held her body tightly; it was just like our wedding day. But her much lighter weight made me sad. On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardly move a step. Our son had gone to school. I held her tightly and said, I hadn’t noticed that our life lacked intimacy.

I drove to office…. jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the door. I was afraid any delay would make me change my mind… I walked upstairs. Dew opened the door and I said to her, Sorry, Dew, I do not want the divorce anymore. She looked at me, astonished, and then touched my forehead. Do you have a fever? She said. I moved her hand off my head. Sorry, Dew, I said, I won’t divorce. My marriage life was boring probably because she and I didn’t value the details of our lives, not because we didn’t love each other any more. Now I realize that since I carried her into my home on our wedding day I am supposed to hold her until deaths do us apart. Dew seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and then slammed the door and burst into tears. I walked downstairs and drove away.. At the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouquet of flowers for my wife. The salesgirl asked me what to write on the card. I smiled and w rote, I’ll carry you out every morning until death do us apart.

That evening I arrived home, flowers in my hands, a smile on my face, I run up stairs, only to find my wife in the bed - dead. Her heart had finally broke down…

The small details of your lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the car, property, the money in the bank, blah… blah… blah… These create an environment conducive for happiness but cannot give happiness in themselves. So find time to be your spouse’s friend and do those little things for each other that build intimacy. Do have a real happy marriage!

“You know when you love someone when you want them to be happy even if their happiness means that you’re not part of it”

favourite local food in Singapore

September 5th, 2008
Some would say that you haven’t been in Singapore if you haven’t tried its local food. Over a 100 Hawker Centres (local food stalls) can be found in the heartlands neighbourhood or shopping malls.

Hawker Centres would probably have these local favourites:

  1. Bak Kuh Teh: pork ribs cooked with several spices, garlic and pepper in a tasty soup that is served with either rice or fried dough fritters. Some would associate this to the Filipino dish called ‘Nilaga’.
  2. Chilli Crab: hard-shell crab cooked in thick gravy with a tomato and chilli base. A packet of wet-wipes-tissue would be handy as you would probably be using your hands.
  3. Hainanese Chicken Rice: steamed chicken served with fragrant rice cooked in chicken stock. Garnished with few strips of sliced fresh cucumber, some prefer to have it with a dip of chilli and dark-soya-sauce.
  4. Laksa: rice noodles in coconut curry gravy with shrimps, eggs, chicken and cockles as garnishing.
  5. Fish Head Curry: a huge fish head and vegetables, cooked in curry and served with rice. Have a glass of ‘calamansi’(local lime juice) to go with it.
  6. Roti Prata: this is a crispy crusty South Indian pancake, made with or without eggs, and served with a thick curry gravy.

Familiar places to consider:

  • Chinatown Food Street along Smith Street
  • East Coast Lagoon Food Village
  • Fisherman’s Village by the beach at Pasir Ris
  • Satay Street at Lau Pa Sat along Boon Tat Street
  • Newton Food Centre
  • People’s Park
  • Tiong Bahro Market and
  • Zion Riverside Food Centre

For a more personal experience of getting-around Singapore, simply flag a taxi/cab. There are atleast seven taxi companies and the yellow-top taxis(owned by individuals) at your disposal.

Taxi stands are strategically located major buildings and shopping malls. You can also get a taxi along the street or book one by phone at a reasonable booking charge. Booking a taxi is usually recommended if you’re in a hurry and travelling during the high-peak period(7-9am, 5-11pm), rainy days or festival seasons as demand for taxi is expected to be very high. Booking for a taxi usually takes around 3-7 minutes upon calling.

Taxi fares are based on the flag-down rate and the distance travelled. Taxi flag-down rates are at SGD 2.50 to SGD 3.00 depending on the type of taxi. There are other surcharges that may apply like midnight/late-night, peak periods, Public Holiday, City Area, from Airport, and passing through ERP gantries. You can check with the taxi driver if you want to be sure.

The following numbers will become handy when you need to book for a taxi.

Life-Is-Great-With-Nature

August 6th, 2008

love and respect for nature has been a common cliche these days.
even large corporations are responding to the Going-Green battlecry.

with the devastating effects of greenhouse gasses to the rising oil-prices, it’s high-time to be serious with the information-dissemination of global warming..

on the lighter-side, we can take part on some initiatives to indirectly promote the love-of-nature through a photo-competition..and win a new Digital SLR camera from Nikon =)

How to forward email properly

August 1st, 2008

in this world and time of too much electronic clutter, we can do our little share to be of less pain to our fellow netizens. when articles like this starts piling up here, we may consider putting them into a separate category later.

or if you have other tips and tricks, feel free to share by posting in the Comments area. Thanks!

/****begin-forwarded-email********************************************/
HOW TO FORWARD E-MAIL APPROPRIATELY

A friend who is a computer expert received the following directly from a system administrator for a corporate system. It is an excellent message that ABSOLUTELY applies to ALL of us who send e-mails.
Please read the short letter below, even if you’re sure you already follow proper procedures.

Please share it with your email buddies!

Do you really know how to forward e-mails? Most of us DO NOT know how.
Do you wonder why you get viruses or junk mail? Do you hate it?
________________________________

Every time you forward an e-mail, there is information left over from the people who got the message before you — namely their e-mail addresses & names. As the messages get forwarded along, the list of addresses builds, and builds, and builds, and all it takes is for some poor sap to get a virus, and his or her computer can send that virus to every email address that has come across his computer. Or, someone can take all of those addresses and sell them or send junk mail to them in the hopes that you will go to the site and he will make five cents for each hit. That’s right, all of that inconvenience over a nickel!
________________________________

How do you stop it? Well, there are several easy steps:
________________________________

(1) When you forward an e-mail, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message (at the top). That’s right, DELETE them. Highlight them and delete them, backspace them, cut them, whatever you know how to. It only takes a second. You MUST click the ‘Forward’ button first and then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message. If you don’t hit the forward button first you won’t have full editing functions . I particularly dislike having to scroll through 200 Email addresses before I get to the email.
________________________________

(2) Whenever you send an e-mail to more than one person, do NOT use the “To:” or “Cc:” fields for adding e-mail addresses.. Always use the BCC: (blind carbon copy) field for listing the e-mail addresses. This is the way the people you send to will only see their own e-mail address.
If you don’t see your “BCC:” option click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC: and that’s it, it’s that easy. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say ‘Undisclosed Recipients’ in the ‘TO:’ field of the people who receive it.< /SPAN>
That way you aren’t sharing all those addresses with every Tom, Dick or Harry.
________________________________

(3) Remove any ‘FW:’ in the subject line. You can re-name the subject if you wish or even fix spelling.

________________________________

This one is very important - please read and heed
(4) ALWAYS hit your Forward button from the actual e-mail you are reading. Ever get those e-mails that you have to open 10 pages to read the one page with the information on it? By Forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view, you stop them from having to open many e-mails just to see what you sent. These are the ones that often end up having picked up a virus from somebody. This is really important!
________________________________

(5) Have you ever gotten an email that is a petition? It states a position and asks you to add your name and address and to forward it to 10 or 15 people or your entire address book. The email can be forwarded on and on and can collect thousands of names and email addresses.
A FACT: The completed petition is actually worth a couple of bucks to a professional spammer because of the wealth of valid names and email addresses contained therein. If you want to support the petition, send it as your own personal letter to the intended recipient. Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and email address on a petition. (Actually, if you think about it, who’s supposed to send the petition in to whatever cause it supports? And don’t believe the ones that say that the email is being traced, it just ain’t so!)
________________________________

(6) One of the main ones I hate is the ones that say that something like, ‘Send this email to 10 people and you’ll see something great run across your screen.’ Or, sometimes they’ll just tease you by saying something really cute will happen.
IT AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN!!!!! (Trust me, I’m still seeing some of the same ones that I waited on 10 years ago!) I don’t let the bad luck ones scare me either, they get trashed. (Could this be why I haven’t won the lottery??)
________________________________

(7) Before you forward an Amber Alert, or a Virus Alert, or some of the other ones floating around nowadays, check them out before you forward them. Most of them are junk mail that’s been circling the net for Years!
Just about everything you receive in an email that is in question can be checked out at Snopes. Just go to http://www.snopes. com/
________________________________

It’s really easy to find out if it’s real or not. If it’s not, please don’t pass it on.
So please, in the future, let’s stop the junk mail and the viruses.
________________________________

Finally, here’s an idea!!! Let’s send this to everyone we know (but strip my address off first, please!).
This is something that SHOULD be forwarded.
